I am planning on conducting a research on gene delivery, however , we only have a limited amount of sources, can you suggest bacterial cells that I can use (preferably cheaper with good transfection efficiency) aside from DH5 Alpha cells from E. coli?
Making your own competent cells is very cheap. What cells to use depends on your constructs I would suggest you make neb-10 or top-10 for your routine cloning if you are making unstable constructs use stlb3 (careful with this one it is endA+).

Here is a summary (chemical transformation hanahan's vs DMSO vs CaCl2): Hanahan's for DH5α, XL-1 Blue and JM109 strains. CaCl2 method was best for SCS110, TOP10 and BL21 strains. The methods are in the ref.
