For the determination of drug release of ocular films (0.5 cm x 0.5 cm), what are the possible methods that can be used? Using dissolution apparatus would be too big for such a small sized film, and drugs are expected to release rapidly. Therefore, what intervention can be done to assess the drug release? Thank you.
Similar to Yahya, I have preformed dissolution testing using an incubated shaker at 37C on drug eluting stents . The stents were designed to release drug over months. We used 2 mL vials with 1.0-1.5 mL of Phosphate Buffer Saline (PBS) pH 7.4. You can set the sampling time points to fit your expected release rate. We typically sampled more frequently at the beginning of the experiment. Also, we performed total replacement of the small volume to minimize bacterial growth. A big advantage is that you can do many tests in one shaker and it is not very expensive.

there are many ways to do release study for your formulations:
1- Franz diffusion cells, there are many different dimensions available from 2 mL receptor volume.
2- Transwell diffusion cells have very small dimensions.
because this films will be used in ocular drug delivery, hence you should consider the presence of membrane during release studies.
