In a study published in The Lancet , the researchers explained a new treatment using stem cells, could potentially repair and regenerate damaged heart tissue.
Researchers treated 17 heart attack patients with an infusion of stem cells taken from their own hearts. A year after the procedure, the amount of scar tissue had shrunk by about 50%
These results sound dramatic, but are they an indication that we're getting close to perfecting this therapy ? and, What are the risks?

Huge amount of studies indicate that stem cells poses great potential for several diseases include regenerating damaged tissues of Heart. Recent works by german group (2014) show that after transplantation reprogrammed stem cells (iPS) in infarcted guinea pig hearts led to enhance cardiac contractile function in this model of myocardial injury. However, this study used iPS cells produced by viruses (retroviruses) which carry high risk for clinical use. Recently, there are several effective ways to produce iPS cells without using viruses. During my study I have reprogrammed human fibroblast to stem cell using mRAN (viral free system and non-integrated). By using iPS cells produced from the same patient cells this will reduce the risk of attacking or rejecting by the immune systems of the patient

Research using the iPSCs still need clinical trials because using these transformed cells may affect the soundness of their cell cycle enabling them tumorigenicity. Most of the transgenes used for transfromation are associated with tumors such as c-myc, oct4 and others. However using embryonic stem cells (autologous) is promising because the absence of transformation. The main disadvantages of autologous ESCs is the using of stem cell nuclear transfer (cloning technique) which consumes oocytes, technically difficult and still faces ethical considerations in human.
