Since 2000 I have been involved in two projects, one in Suriname to help revitalize a small city, Moengo (Mungo) in Suriname (since 2000) and a shopping street in Rotterdam, the Netherlands (since 2015). One in a developing country (Suriname) and one in an urban area (Rotterdam, The Netherlands.
I am trying to find out what the differences and similarities of development are in rural and urban area's in a broader perspective, than this two projects.
Do you have experience with research or with projects in developing and/or developed countries? What are your experiences or findings? What are the characteristics?
This question can be answered from a multi- and interdisciplinary point of view.

The characteristics of Rural and Urban have distinct and clear to everyone because the environment matters a lot of identifying their characteristics Rural people are living very close to the environments where they are involving in agriculture, forestry and agribusiness activities. The urban are in cities environment where they have all sorts of facilities available. Ther are many factors affecting and influencing the Rural and Urban as well. Such as
1. Agroecology
2. Education
3. Family system
4. Language
4. Cultural behaviors
5. Cosmopoliteness
6. Occupation
7. Income
These Rural and Urban differences and similarities can be observed in Asian countries and the developed countries like Canada and Australia rural peoples have somethings different than other developing countries.
Mostly rural peoples are known each other in the village environment having a common language, ethnic background, common business activities like agriculture, dairy and poultry, etc. They are homogenous characteristics. Rural people are living in a joint family and extended family where three generations are in a single roof. Their identity is traditional, having greater social security and the way in which they can learn the new knowledge but not urgent. There is a health disadvantage associated with decreased morbidity, longevity and health risk, etc. They are living in organic life to some extent because of nature dependent life. They have a great bond of relationship and good affinity.
The Urban peoples have a nuclear family structure, the multi-linguistic, multi-ethnic background of the people, having income, health, food securities are there. They have assured a good life because of Insurance and Health security benefits awareness etc. They are heterogeneous characteristics of populations. They do not know each other and they are not interested to know others. Their idea and motive are focusing only on how to earn income to excel in their life better. They don't have much faith in God, relatives but believe only on their effort and income. They never trust each other. It is a mechanical life rather than social bonding.
There are many research studies were conducted on these similarities and differences between Rural and Urban scientifically. You can retrieve some useful articles from Springer Nature and Elsevier etc.

Rural and urban are two different dimensions of development. Both have different scarcity and different qualities. Where in the rural area mostly depend on the primary sector the other hand urban is depend on the secondary or tertiary sector. If we observe there is a pull effect towards the urban areas from the rural area. In rural areas, the health and environment is quite hygienic than the urban slams. but there are very less alternatives to earn. On the other hand, the facilities of health and education are good in urban areas compare to rural areas. The agro-based economy of the rural area is a sustainable one but to grow up in the economic classes urban service-based economy is also important. I have very little knowledge about this. Only 3 years I am working in this sector. But I mostly explore the rural areas only and especially the tribal locations.
poverty is everywhere rural and urban slum both, but because of pull and push factor rural people once come to the urban areas and settling down, which again increases their expenditure and health issues. Another side this is also true that in urban slum poor people anyhow find small work or small roadside business which saves them from starvation.
Rural areas are better than urban areas for some indicators for example: low pollution and crime. Little or no presence of government administrative centers and financial centers. It is important to mention that urban areas have better development indicators: education, housing and health.
