The IoT monitored Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) rice irrigation system works by using sensors and wireless connections to monitor and control the irrigation process. Here’s a brief explanation:

Monitoring: Sensors are used to monitor the depth of the water table in the field. This data is then transmitted via wireless connections to a central management system.

Control: The management system processes the data and makes decisions about when to turn the pumps on and off. This is done automatically, often using devices like servo motors to open floodgates and water pumps.

As for the limitations of adopting this system by uneducated farmers in developing nations, there are a few challenges:

Technological Adaptation: Both small- and large-scale implementations of AWD have yet to achieve expected success due to lack of proper adaptation of technologies like IoT.

Infrastructure: The system requires a certain level of fault tolerance, necessary for communicating decisions in a low-income country, where sensor faults may not be readily repaired, power may not be reliable, and internet access and end-user technology ranges from short message service (SMS) only, to smartphones.

Education and Training: Uneducated farmers may face difficulties in understanding and operating the IoT-based system. This problem can be mitigated if farmers use an automatic and intelligent irrigation system using sensors based IoT communication system.

Despite these challenges, the benefits of such a system, including increased water-use efficiency and potential for water footprint mitigation, make it a promising solution for sustainable rice cultivation. Taufiqur Rahman
