In my observation , basically for the theory based assignments, student depend on web pool (INTERNET). They most of the time search the assignment there and submit by down loading even without editing even with false referencing ! Are these not negligence by the gift of technology? I motivate my students to proper use of technology , not for the unethical use for the same.

Either because they don't have enough data, the topic is not clear to the student, the supervisor is not satisfied with the performance of students . The student is so busy with exams, that he / she is unable to hand in the research on time.

Procrastination, laziness and lack of proper time management on the part of many students.

We cannot act as parents. As adults they have to develop certain traits to succeed, although many will succeed anyway.

I remember my own student days. I worked to make money at the same time as studying. When a lecture was over, I went out to work until late. When there were no lectures I worked all day until late evening. I had no choice. Therefore, I only scrapped into the deadlines, having to revise and read additional papers as quickly and opportunely as I could.

All the reasons are already offered. However, you left the opportunity "other" and this is very wide field of answers, such as: lack of self-confidence and economic/financial aspects of students. We have to keep on mind that a huge number of students are working to support them. Thinking in past, it was easier to study in my time. This means some 25 years before Bologna process. The deadlines were not so strict, the study was free of charge, and you can enrol the next academic year with one, two and sometimes even three exams from previous academic year. Nowadays, the things are much faster, the deadlines are sometimes extremely short and consequently the level of stress is higher, both for the students as well as for academic staff. It seems to me that nowadays the studying is similar to learning on some “higher” secondary preparatory or secondary vocational school, than studying on University as it used to be. The students of life sciences and technical sciences really have no time for themselves. They are no students, i.e. young intellectuals in complete sense of word. They can’t afford themselves a time to go to theatre, or to see some exhibition, or to read some book which is not related to their study curricula. That’s because they have no their good’s given right to have a free time just for themselves and their personal needs. Unfortunately, it is not rare that some of them are cracking just like popcorn. That’s the problem.

I think you are partially true. University students are self motivated. They are giving efforts on the basis of credits of the subjects. Some practical subjects they are very attentive than theoretical modules as there are more credits in practical subjects than theoretical. This my own experience !

I am somewhat overwhelmed getting your insightful detail answer here. Yes, everything is true and I am agree with you.

I believe that it is a combination of reasons. sometimes it can be procrastination, poor time management, students can be overwhelmed with other work, assignments, papers, exams, or even personall or family responsibilities.Sometimes issues with technology can be the issue. Other times it could be that the assignment is convoluted, confusion on part of the student. Sometimes students are too embarrassed to say that they do not understand.

I recommend the Eli Manning method when they have large projects or papers, especially for doctoral students. This method is to take one task at a time and break it down into smaller units so as not to be overwhelmed by huge projects.

Many reasons are there. It also depends on the student categories. All student are not equally talented and also not have same mentality to complete their task or assignments or homework. Some student may be submit the things with punctuality, but some student may not be.

Sometimes the students don't understand what exact should to be do, many of students try but lack of data they won't submit assignment within time.

My dear colleague trust me, they know what to do with the project assignment, but if and only if (!!!) The project assignment is described well and if the assignment is designed precisely due to the real situation, following the strict engineering approach (if we're talking about project assignments in technical and life sciences). The problem is when and if the module or subject/collegium coordinator and academic staff mix the nature of project assignment with exam. The sense of project assignment is "training" for real situation and preparing for exam. Yes, according to Bologna process the results of project assignments has to be considered in final overall evaluation of course. But, the sense of project assignment is primarily exercise to praper the attendants for real situations.

Some of the students like to keep them on back foot and some of them are simply followers which makes the situation worsen and difficult.

All the negative reasons outlined in your post are the causes of late submissions of students.

Late submission is the killer of the assessment system while good, regular students even the perfectionist teacher suffers much as its the interruption to the whole process . Yes, for accidentally, there may be scope to allow this, otherwise not, because, intelligence may go off with laziness to inspire the rest of the class.

No or little reward in the form of marks doesn't motivate all students. Time to be spent on assignment is actually utilized on studies for marks/ reward in exams. Moreover, majority of the teachers don't properly assess the assignments and award same marks/ grades to a good and to an average written assignment.

May be not all but many students nowadays lazier than we were. They keep themselves busy in the social medias up to late night , go to bed about dawn and get up in the early evening . How they will do their homeworks. I am not blaming all, some of them.
