As I see it, there is much to be gained when sudents prepare and present a seminar.

1) When preparing a seminar, students have to look for appropriate information and knowledge related to the topic of the seminar. Thus, to prepare a seminar is an opportunity for students to get knowledege, or, as you say, an excellent way of learning, organizing information and knowledge, and increasing their sense of responsibility and autonomy. 

2) When delivering or presenting a seminar, students  interact and exchange perspectives with the audience. Note that to exchange perspectives and viewpoints is generally the fabric of what science is made of. In addition, to exchange perspectives and viewpoints is a good occasion for students to teach and learn.

3) To present a seminar is also an excellent occasion for students to increase their sense of self-confidence, self-esteem, self-efficacy, and the like.

I think that, in principle, to prepare and present a seminar is a job to be done by Master and Ph D students. When this is not the case, it is likely that students present, say, a poor seminar and they come to feel frustrated and lose their sense of competence, self-efficacy, self-esteem.

I have integrated "learning by teaching" into many of my modules for a number of years. I used this particularly with international masters students. The attached paper provides full detail of my approach, where small groups of students prepare and deliver the teaching for a week of a module. The main benefits, in my experience, included:

1. deeper learning. Students have to engage with the topic in great depth to make choices as to what to include in their teaching, and to set tutorial topics and exercises.

2. Confidence gained by students. The approach was very daunting to students initially but afterwards they all reported it had given them a lot of confidence in their abilities and knowledge. This was also evident in their increased participation in other tutorials after their delivery.

Presentation is the best method for the students to understand the topic properly as one time teaching is two times learning. But, it should be at later stage of studies in the academic year. We do conduct presentations of our PG and UG students in the mid term.

What are the benefits of the preparation and the presentation of a seminar from the student?

What follows is a short list of the benefits of the preparation and presentation of a seminar on the part of the student,

(1)  When preparing the seminar, the student has to get and select information and knowledge relevant to the topic at hand. Thus, to prepare a seminar is an opportunity for the student to learn and also to show how much s/he masters the topic at hand.

(2) To prepare and present a seminar is an excellent occasion for the student to enhance his/her sense of responsibility, self-confidence, self-esteem, self- efficacy. and the like. 

(3) Presenting a seminar is an excellent occasion for the student to receive feedback form the audience and exchange perspectives and viewpoints with them. As the Suiss psychologist Jean Piaget once noted one's learning and development is greatly dependent upon one's ability to exchange perpectives and viewpoints.

(4) Presenting a seminar is also an ocasion for the student enhance his/her knowledge of educational technologies. Note that to present powerpoints is a commom practice when delivering a lecture or a seminar.

(5) When a student presents a seminar s/he has to deal with time limits. So, that activity is as also activity of time management.

(5) to present a seminar is also an occasion for the student to put on another's shoes and hence an opportunity to foster his/her level of interpersonal development and understanding (see, for this, respect, Robert Selman's work on the growth of interpersonal development and understanding).

(6) A caveat is in order at this point. In other words, to present a seminar is a demanding task. As such, I am of the opionion that to present a seminar is a job to be done by Master or  Ph D students. When this is not the case the student may fail when s/he presents it and, hence, instead of being an opportunity to experience sell-confidence, it may turn out to be an opportunity to experience anxiety, distress, and lack of confidence (see, for this respect, Martin Seligman's work on learning helplessnesss and its detrimental effects to one's development and learning).

The preparation and presentation of a seminar from the students is an excellent way of learning indeed and it's an effective way to develop the student's scientific personality and not feel embarrassed by throwing the seminar and discussed with professors and students

Presenting a seminar forces the student (1) to master the material sufficiently well to teach it to others and (2) to know the connections between the information in relevant primary and secondary sources. Regarding (1), one truly learns material by teaching it to others. Regarding (2), the student is able to put themselves in the role of a scholar, who is expected to know the sources inside and out.
