Yes, social media for me is an important part of the education tools, every subject I supervise or teach, has its own facebook groupe where a direct and long-lasting exchange between interested people is taking place.( including previous students). I’ll give some links to those pages and groups.

I agree with my colleagues who said no. I do not accept students requests on my personal account because that is for my personal life, friends and family. however, I have a face book page for my students to share academic content and answer their questions and give them quizzes and assignment.

I am a consequent opponent of social media in the net, so I am also opponent of Facebook etc. They seem to be a democratic forum, but they work without any chance to be controlled in a visible democratic manner, in other words: they destroy democratic structures.

I prefer no, but if they sent i would accept. So far, even i got my PhD few years ago, i have NOT sent a request to neither my MSc nor PhD SV. I think academic platforms like RG and other communication ways should be enough. FB, Instagram, ... etc are more personally.

Not all of the students; only the trustworthy. Some of the students May have malicious intentions behind sending friend requests on Facebook, and may use any personal information or photos against the teacher, especially when these post appear only to those in the friends circle.

I do. It's a good way for me to connect with the students outside of the classroom. Since I intentionally don't put anything on my Facebook page that is private or confidential, I don't have an issue with students seeing what's there. However, if you do put things on your Facebook page that are private or confidential, then you shouldn't friend your students.

If they need in communication with me, why not? I'm open for all my students. Sometimes, they miss me, or want to share their problems, interests and success, or to have my advice or new interesting materials. If your students trust you, it means you are a good teacher.

The current society is getting more open day by day. Social media are not just a passing phenomenon; they are found to stay. Today, more than ever, students need to learn the basics of social networking. The social and cultural environment is an important factor in answering this question. The societies of the developed countries have overcome this issue by virtue of their early communication with the means of communication, while the students of developing societies still need to learn the basics and principles of means of communication and their purpose. Therefore, it can be said that there is no objection to that relationship within certain limits and clear.

Funny thing I was only invited to be friends from my very best students. I accepted and just follow their progress and lives, don't actually communicate with them.

On second thoughts I wanted to know about how they have ended up doing in life. So the mutual contact worked very well.

We do have a social media policy that we are guided by, which requires clearance from our Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL). I use Facebook for teaching if it fits into the design of the course but I do not usually accept invitations from students to join their social media networks.

I usually accept student requests on FB. However, i never encourage them to have personal chats with me, instead i have made different students' "groups" in FB to communicate as well as to share important learning resources with them. Even, i respond to any queries made by students in such groups. Meanwhile, i refrain from posting or sharing sensitive and private information on my FB. If someone is addicted and heavily utilizing FB for sharing sensitive personal information, i would suggest not to add any students to his/her profile. Further, "privacy" options of FB can be customized to keep students away from sensitive personal information.

I have two profiles - one private one for students. On profile for students I accept their friendship requests and I post only student-related items. This allows me to separate business and private things.

It's totally up to you "how you are friendly or frank" with your students.

Few students are naughty while few students are highly motivated and influenced by their teachers. If they (both type of students) want to follow you. It's up to you to choose which should come in your social media life or which shouldn't. The behavior varies from person to person. Everyone has his own experience to judge.

Also, there are a lots of partial and full control method to restrict your audience on social media platforms. One should explore these options to enjoy the Social media according to their choice.
