Sometime the curriculum from the previous year just does not suit the knowledge of the next generation. Of course, I do not change the basic, however, the changes consider the depth of the material.

I teach subjects that contribute to the formation of professional counselors. By definition a profession is a group of individuals who share or have in common a specific body of knowledge, a specific set of practices or competencies, and a way of being that embodies an ethical life. These parameters need to shape both the macro-curriculum in professional education (i.e., the overall structure of a program) as well as the micro-curriculum (i.e., what is taught within a specific course, or even within a specific class session). As a result, I design my courses around three basic criteria.

a) What is the knowledge base that is required for the student to function as an "entry-level" professional?

b) What are the skills and competencies that are required for the student to function as an "entry-level" professional? This includes reasoning skills as well as performance skills.

c) To understand how their "self" relates to the work of counseling. In part, this involves engaging students to reflect on who they are as persons in relationship to the knowledge, issues, competencies, etc. presented within the course.

Well Prof , I would start with basics ,assuming the students know some it or have studied in a previous course .

Have couple of reference books or your own and formulate a curriculum for given time frame !!!

This is an important question as it relates to what we call accreditation process for universities, colleges and career schools in America. As almost all colleagues above pointed out, a scientific or educational curriculum is devised based on demand and necessity to solve problems in science, society or in industry, technology or otherwise. The coverage of material and length and depth of each course are determined by the types and depth of knowledge and skills needed, and determining the duration in order knowledge, proficiency and confidence are gained for specific professions of new hirees.

It is also important to know that the curriculum developed, which is vital for the proper functioning of an academic institution, has to have quality standards in relation to other institution, since education today is considered to be a commodity, not a social necessity, so those who revise or update their curriculum timely by looking at what society needs, what time needs, will have more demands.

In Gujarat Technological University, there is a committee for each department' s curriculum. The committee is headed by Coordinator and has 5 members incorporated by the university. Out of these members, 2 members are industry experts and others are from academics having sound experience- a person of senior professor/Principal or Dean level experts.

The initial framing of the curriculum is based on the available curriculum of Institute of national importance like Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) or National Institute of Technology (NIT) . Based on the industry need and the standard curriculum thus become guideline and subsequent to series of meetings, the curriculum is finalized and the matter is then put up before the Academic Council headed by Deans , Vice Chancellor and Government representatives who will finally give sanction.

The review of syllabus is made at the end of 3 years in normal circumstances and revision is made considering industry demand, student's feed back and the subject teachers recommendations

It require lot of dedicated efforts

Creating curriculum may not be individual view it has to be with the group of team members with the same subject matter expert. Individually there can be curriculum recommendations that would be taken to the committee and decided.

The prerequisites for the person to recommend/prepare a draft should be experienced in that domain, understand basics clearly, longer visionary...... and many related to academics...

As stated by Dr K N Sheth, this is done at senior level committee in The University and finally sanctioned by Academic Council. The basic aim is to ensure that the curriculum should be of IIT level and industry need based.

In our system the College does not make the curriculum but the University to which the College is affiliated has a 'Board of Studies' of the concerned department - all courses separately.

The BOS has teachers from the affiliated Colleges and the University who decide about the syllabus. There is also a system of sub-committees which goes into the detail of all the classes and recommends changes.

The College teachers who are not members of the BOS are also invited as special invitees to deliberate on the syllabus related issues.
