Can anyone kindly explain what is mean by three different colours of cracks in RC beams in ANSYS APDL and the features of first crack (red colour outline) second crack (green colour outline) and third crack (blue coloured outline).
What does three three different cracks first,second and third cracks indicates?
As we have flexural, inclined shear and compression cracks as observe in experimental study, then in ANSY APDL what represents the first/second/thirds cracks related to experimental cracks.

the first crack represents the stage at which the concrete starts to crack i.e. when the corresponding applied load induces the stress greater than the modulus of rupture of concrete(used as input in the material model), this crack occurs at the bottom fiber where there is the maximum bending moment and these cracks are usually flexure in nature. these cracks start propagating from bottom fibers to top fibers with the increasing load which also increases their numbers.
the second crack falls somewhere in between the first cracks and third crack(final failure of concrete), and are generally flexural in nature. with subsequently increasing loads, the shear(diagonal) cracks can also be observed but at the later stage. moreover, the yielding of the reinforcement can also be seen in this stage.
the third crack(in blue colour) represents the final failure stage of the concrete, at this stage, the flexural and shear cracks can be observed in great numbers. And it can be noted that, just before the failure of the concrete, the compressive cracks are seen at the top fibers representing the crushing failure of the concrete.
thus, the cracking pattern must be checked with the increasing applied load at every stage and their nature can be identified to check the failure behavior of the materials.
