I'm about to start working with these materials, so I have this question.
I guess is a thing of terminology and may not be an entire consensus of the handle of these two terms regarding on the number of monolayer one can have stacked before switching to the term "Graphite".
I don't know much about the synthesis of this material. But I guess that to obtain one single monolayer in practice should be something nearly imposible to make.
So my question is:
The use of the term "graphe" should be between what range of number of monolayers?
Recently in one of my classes I had a professor who worked on Graphene and he said to us the boundary to swith terms is 8 (or about 8) monolayers.
I hope someone can show light to this question for me.

Short story: the maximum number of carbon monolayers to be called graphene is (by definition) ONE.

Saying that, many people want to use the name graphene even if the material is not single layer, because it makes it sound showy. However, this nomenclature will not be accepted in any respectable journal where the sample is not single-layered (e.g. ACS Nano will quickly reject it).

Graphene = Single atomic layer of Graphite.
Graphite = Many Graphene layers stacked together.
Graphene is already single layer. If its not single layer, then you can not say it as Graphene. In research community sometimes people refer few-layered Graphene and multi-layered Graphene, that means: few and multiple layers of individual Graphene layers are stacked together.

Chandan, I understand what you are saying, I don't know whether is for the fact I haven't met a lot of people who are working with this material, but I hear a lot the term graphene for the material stacked in more than one monolayer ...
I don't know, I wanted a practical and use of language approach. It may be more confusing in one language than others, for instance, in spanish (which is my mother tongue) we don't use naturally the terms "few-layered Graphene" and "Multi-layered Graphene" although I agree with everything you say, I guess that; at least at this point, it is most a language issue (mostly of translation) than an ignorance issue.
But you are right; we have to do our best to call things as their technical names given by its properties are.
