The most promising are interdisciplinary research. Therefore, it is advisable to receive several trainings and carry out research in various fields of science.
Is it possible to switch research paths after completing a Ph.D.? or we should stay in the same discipline? Did anyone practice this?
It depends on your individual's needs or aspirations. My personal opinion & experience is - once you'd completed your PhD, you'd been taught the research process & rigor that capable to explore different research contents or how to help yourself to pick up when you are lacking in certain research areas / techniques / approach etc.
It is important to posses multifacet expertise of several disciplines so doctoral graduates can work and operate in different research settings. It is helps solve the one trick pony syndrome.
Excellent Question !!. On Global Issue it is recommened to join at any Post - Doc
position under a SR. Scientistists Lab as R.A / at a Research & Technology Scientist Position .
But in Indian Scienario after doing Ph.D & after doing 5 yrs post Ph.D position at Industry / Academic postion just seating idle / Unemployed position for last 02 Yrs .It is most common experiance for an Indian Ph.D holder staying at India .
Agreed through learning from other disciplines / neighboring scientific fields & combine them with our core domain research area can increase the opportunity for new knowledge discovery & contribution.
We should never succumb to our desires . As such, if the action gives one an inner satisfaction , one should act without any hesitation. However, this would be a difficult situation. As Robert Frost describes in one of his poems:
I do not prefer to switch paths of research immediately after completing the doctorate, but after a long period of time and after the researcher acquires new skills, then the researcher can change his research path.
You can search in fields that related to your specialization in one way or another but not to go far because your accumilatef knowledge from your study in PhD will go in vian.
I did my PhD-thesis more than 10 years after I left university and while working in real live (in public service): I finished twelve years ago and am still regularly working in its field. But later on I collected different interesting questions and am regularly also publishing on these different questiosn (in more or less the same field)...
Basically, researcher has to narrow down his research interest in order to form a solid knowledge and skills in his specialisation. However, in many circumstances, researcher should expand his research interest under the need of their workplace particularly, if researcher work in the industry out of the academia.
