In my opinion there it makes no sense or I see no advantage to not transcribe the interviews. In the end the student needs to cite the sources and defend the claims he/she mades. Also its better for you so you can in terms of intersubjective comprehensibility see where those results came from. I can only suspect that maybe the person doesnt want to do the work with the transcription?

Then theres the possibility to do a selective transcription when you only highlight specific parts of the interview (but then there should be a relfection about the way the interview was conducted and why he/she can skip other parts)@, but i would not recommend it, because (again in my opinion) its prosperous when the researcher handles its whole data.

Maybe there are fields where an aural analysis (in which way ever) is common and acceptable, but thats behind my knowledge.

I agree with Elias here. It would be best to follow the common principles of qualitative studies. Transcribing is indeed the core process of qualitative studies.

I agree with Elias as well and in my opinion it is much easier to use the data if it is in written format. If you don't want to do the transcription yourself you can always outsource the work.

Hi Ranga, thanks for your response. I think the student is under some pressure in trying to get the work done within a timescale and may be looking for some ways to make the workload easier. I have spoken to her about the need to transcribe and she is going to do it.
