When I use dithiothreitol (DTT) in my western blot Laemmli buffer, I usually wear a mask. Is this entirely necessary? Sometimes I get a whiff of the DTT even while wearing a mask. Are there significant dangers of working with small volumes of DTT, or are they too minimal to be concerned about?

I think its advisable to avoid inhaling the fume from your noise,either by keeping your nose away from the container while opening the cap or open it using the fume hood.Even if you make use of mask and you open it close to your nose ,you will still have a whiff of it.Although when handling small volume,the whiff doesn't have effect on inhalation but avoid contact with the eyes and skin.I don't think you should worry about that because of no significant effect.

Dear, it is advisable to wear protective/safety equipment while working with DDT. This is mainly due to the harmful effects of DDT as presented below.
H302 - Harmful if swallowed
H315 - Causes skin irritation.
H319 - Causes serious eye irritation.
H335 - May cause respiratory irritation.
P261 - Avoid breathing dust/fume/gas/mist/vapors/spray.
P302+P352 - IF ON SKIN: Wash with plenty of soap and water.
P305+P351+P338 - IF IN EYES: Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing.
P501 - Dispose of contents/containers to an approved waste disposal plant

It is preferable to wear the appropriate type of masks for this condition and wear it during the working period.
Don't underestimate the protection via the wearing of the mask. Also, do well to observe all other safety precautions.
