That highly depends on kind of secondary metabolites you want to study.

I am to study about the alkaloids and glycosides, please do suggest me the appropriate methods of detection and quantification. Is it possible?

For glycoside in TLC go with Chloroform:Methanol:water(65:35:5). Dry you TLC. Spray it with 10%H2SO4 and heat it on 100C oven. It will give you purple spots.

For alkaloids, Butanol: glacial acetic acid:water(5:4:1). Dry your TLC. Spray it with Dragdorff reagent (Basic bismuth nitrate and acetic acid acid in water b. KI in water (1:1 mixture of a and b).

For quantification you can go with HPTLC.

What kind of secondary metabolites, you want identify?

Alkaloids, flavonols, cumerines, steroids... Idon´t know if this abstract can help you (Is in spanish)... But if you need information more specific, just tell me!!!

I will be working on Secoiridoids form Swertia plants. I hope i can get through the tasks. Besides, there are many papers that cannot be accessed by me.

I found this interesting conversation searching in google for "identification and quantification of secondary metabolites". Maybe some of you can help me. I appreciate any advice.

Soon, I will start a study similar to Pradeep´s study. But I want identify four secondary metabolites (Tannins, Trypsin inhibitors, Saponins and Alkaloids) from seeds of 30 tropical tree species.

I am novel in this issue, so, I need basic information on how collect seeds, what exact part I need collect and what are the conditions of storage. I will be collecting seeds in the rain forest and I do not know what I must prepare seeds and how it keeping while I bring it to the lab?
