I'm just wondering what the resolution limits are of EELS and EDX. In essence I have titanium dioxide nanoparticles (~ 10-20nm) which have been doped with various heavy metals, would EELS or EDX be resolved enough to see differences in the atomic composition on an almost atomic scale so as to differentiate areas of the nanoparticles made up of titanium versus those composed of other metals?
Right the question is whether you're interested about energy and/or spatial resolution? Regarding EELS, you can reach pretty high energy resolution (i.e. > 400 meV for core-loss edges, even less using a monochromated system), and if coupled with a Cs-aberrated STEM instrument, then you can get atomic scale spatial resolution, and therefore precise information on atomic composition and so on... but this depends also on which heavy metal you're looking for, and at which doping level.... etc.
