I'm writing a publication where I'm going to use some results including relative water content in salinity-stressed plants. In tissues of severely stressed plants, relative water content is close to 1. I want to put these data in a mathematical formula, in order to compare stressed plants (where RWC is close to 1) and control plants... I have realized that 1-RWC values are much more useful and sensitive for this analysis than RWC, because I get a clearer distinction between highly stressed plants. (For instance, instead of comparing between RWC=0.99 and RWC=0.98, I compare between values 1-RWC=0.01 and 1-RWC=0.02.)
My problem is, that I have no information that anyone has ever given a scientific name to (1-RWC), and I don't want to keep calling it "1-RWC" throughout the manuscript. Do you know if anyone has published a scientific name for (1-RWC) and if yes, can you please provide me the reference?

RWCD is relative water control deficit. I guess J Passsioura or R. Munns past literatures but probably a better index is DI as (1- rwcs/rwcc), where the relative water content under stress, rwcs, is relative to rwcc of turgid leaves. as in Ehdaie, B., A.P. I have downloaded the article of Ehdaie et al. but I think I'll go for RWCD anyway. I've tried to download the works of Passioura and Munns but my institution doesn't have the subscription to Australian Journal of Plant Physiology. Could you please send me their work where RWCD is mentioned?

I can not too for such old stuff. Care to set 1 or 100 as reference and to define how full water contente was determined if turger was measured and how. Usually these values come from PV curves. and volume units are shown in a sample plot.

So, to summarize... RWCD actually equals 1-RWC, that is:
RWCD = 1-RWC = 1 - ((FW-DW) / (TW-DW)) = (TW-FW) / (TW-DW)
Did I get that right?
And can I cite Passioura and Munns about that?

If you can't find a scientific term you can suppose letter and mentioned at manuscript at first time as abbreviation then you can use it allover your manuscript, eg. A (1-RWC)

I would advise reading the following book chapter, ' Barrs HD (1968) 'Determination of water deficits in plant tissues'. In 'Water Deficits and Plant Growth'. ed T. T. Kozlowski, Academic Press, New York, pp 236-368.
Henry Barrs & his PhD supervisor P.E. Weatherley undertook the original work developing this measure, which they called 'Relative Turgidity' in the mid 1950's.The above paper gives the most thorough treatise on all the various measures assessing plant water status that I know of.
Another important paper is, 'Barrs, H.D. &
Weatherley, P.E. (1962) A re-examination of the relative turgidity technique for estimating water deficits in leaves, Australian Journal of Biological Science, 15, pp 413-428.
I think it was only Neil (NC) Turner who coined the term 'relative water content' in his Plant & Soil (1981) paper.

What's you email Martin. I'll scan the pages relevant to 'water content of plants' from Barrs (1968) & send them to you. Who knows maybe you could call '1-RWC', 'relative flaccidity' as flaccid is the opposite of turgid! I can't remember whether Barrs refers to this value in his 1968 paper. We'll see! Mark

Water saturation deficit (WSD).
Refer to page 243 & 244 of the Barrs (1968) paper.
Note that RWC was originally referred to as Relative Turgidity (RT) in the early work of Barrs & Weatherley published in the 1950's. I attach the relevant section about water content measurement from the Review by Barrs (1968) where he defines
WSD= 100-RT, i,e. WSD=100-RWC.

I also found same results regarding RWC in a way that plants under salinity stress had higher RWC than control plants. Most of the literatures found opposite. I appreciate if you inform me about papers that reported the same results as we found. Also I am looking forward to seeing your publication.

Yes that is also the case with my findings, if you increase the salinity, RWC values go up to 1 (bringing WSD down to 0). It is a completely legitimate result.
