I have two datasets of abundance count (continuous response variable) and habitat features (continuous explanatory variable). One was collected in the year 2000 and another collected in the year 2020. After calculating the change between 2000 and 2020 data, I have found some negative values in both response and explanatory variables. Now I wish to find out which of the changes in the explanatory variables are influencing for the changes in the response variable. Please suggest me which statistical test should be performed.
It seem (relatively) simple to just compare some changes, but that does not get you far and may just result in someloose observations andno deeper ecological insights. If you put all the data into the context of an ecological model (considering quantitative, possibly non-linear realtionships and interactions, considering unobservables that probably changed between 2000 and 2020 and so on, the whole thing becomes quite complicated. So I stongly suggest: Collaborate with a local statistician!

Seriously, I think this is going too deep for RG. If you want a realy valuable analysis, sit together with a statistician, take that time. As a side-effect you will probably also learn a lot.
