An annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world assembled by the American news magazine Time is published every year. In Serbia, this happens similarly. I am glad that one of the most famous living Serbian scientists Dejan ILIĆ, who is an author of more than 600 patents, is second ranking on this list. The seventh place holder is professor Gordana Vunjak Novaković etc! How are your country's scientists and professors ranked on these lists? What are your experiences, give examples. This is good for promotion of both science and education.

Regarding the possible editors, mercenary journalists and media men of various parties could make some money for themselves. However, I think simple people are not interested for these "famous" people but for 5 minutes.
A better idea would be a list of the 100 most honest and honourable people of any nation if for being honest would be an acknowledged merit these days.
I am sure the list of the 100 most influential people and that of the 100 most honest people of any nation would not be the same.

@Nelson, most countries are like Brazil. Football and showbiz are the things that people desire for entertainment. But Serbia is fortunate that it had Tesla, so the Serbs know the value of Science and scientists :)

To my knowledge such a list is not available for Indian scientists. I feel proud that perhaps India is the only country in the world to have a scientist President Prof APJ Abdul Kalam in past years (please correct me if I am wrong).

The list contains the 100 richest people, inspite of the fact that Hungary is the country where the number of people have Nobel prize is the highest relating to the number of citizens, and inventors gave as many important things to the world starting from the ballpen via the transformator till the Vitamin C. It is a shame, that the richness is more important and interesting status in my country than the result of scientist or investors.

The closest thing I found to corroborate to your question with some Brazilian info were a couple of wiki-lists - these are made by field of activity, so there's no way to place scientists amid other influential people - and Forbes fantastic Celebrities-100 list.
The closest people to an intellectual that I found in the latest FORBES list were a venerated actress, and a well respected photographer; plenty of pop singers (of probably ephemerous celebrity), famous football players, and one bestselling novelist of cheap reputation, that intellectuals neither read nor praise :-). I guess that the absence of scientists in this list will make most intellectuals and many scientists happy.
Bruno Latour once said that Brazil was born modern (an intelligent, well-informed word game from the author of We've never been modern...). I'm not sure: are my findings to corroborate or to deny Latour's words?

Yeah, Canada has its own great scientists too like David Suzuki for example. However, I would not rely on ranking based on their economic status if we are looking for a 'successful' and popular scientists. Furthermore, it is good to show to general audience that scientists are not typical panhandlers on the street, and that they can be successful economically in life as well. If we measure scientists' success by work they do, then there are millions of them out there regardless of their nationality or economic status or even academic merit or high number of whatever scores we have created like number of patents etc. Every bit of any kind of science and art that is contributed and recorded plays a significant role for a collective human entity.

As you can see only these 5 names above with German and USA affiliations overcome 'in times' (3-10 times) the 'scientific contributions' of the peoples from the rank-list of Times.
Most probably this is again some of the populistic statistics of Times, aiming marketing promotion, political influence, and related, but definitely is very far from criteria for the evaluation of the scientific contributions.
Furthermore Mr. Jacic, what means serbian scientists for the case of Mr. Ilic. I read only the internet biography, and taking into account how old is he. my question for you would be why you are not graduate in Germany, USA and related during the socialistic time-systems in our countries?! and why you have not now affitiation with *.edu, *.de, *.fr and related, but stay at TC Pozarevec and waiting how much serbian government shall reduce the funding for your College and/or PhD students in the next-budget-year.
Unfortunatelly this process of support of conjuncture continures in the west-democracies, but resulted to danger degradation of the level of science and higher education. By the way above shown names of peoples with outstanding contributions are actually wery small number. All other academics/researchers payed very high price for for this support of 'continures' (so-calles scientists even some of them so-called 'businessmans').

The 'problem' Mr Jacic is: 'you classified as scientist' somebody who is author of 280 publications, in USA. In parallel in USA have really scientists with outstanding contributions in the science, but their names are not in 'Times'. Than for what influence we aer talking. If there is question for 'political' influence or 'business lobby' than the contributions are for the politics and business. The names of these peoples just are not in Times as a result of their scientific impact. In this respect in your question you mixed 'influence serbs' from in political and bussiness elite with serbian scientists/researchers having scientific achievements.
@Bojidarka, it was not I who have classified them as scientists. They are scientists! Also, this list is Serbian list, not Times, but Serbian newspaper BLIC' s expert jury! Such list have been published in recent years.It is obvious that you have not carefully read the topic about which you so vigorously discuss!

This list doesnot exist in our country India. However according to me, the Former president Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam would list the most influencial. The Nobel prize winner Prof. CV Raman and recently, Dr. CN Rao can be assigned great indian scientists.

This question is both very interesting and very difficult to answer. Influence is difficult to measure. Perhaps we should be looking at RG for an answer. Those scientists who are the most active (as representatives of a country) on RG are the most influential.
Like Bassam, Lachezar and some others, I don't think we have such a list at all. The popular people here are politicians, movie artistes, pop musicians, and the rich. I haven't seen a scientist being interviewed on TV, but I often see politicians, artistes, rich entrepreneurs.
It could be that scientists do not want the limelight. Just let us get on with our work, that is all we ask. As James said, those of us who are active on RG interact, and influence one another :)
