Interesting @ Ljubomir...I don't know about this. But I know Pantheon (Temple for all the Gods in Ancient Rome) in Vatican and visited twice. An interesting monument.

Go back as far as 4000 BC and people were still fascinated by fame. But who was the Kim Kardashian of Ancient Egypt? Or the Brad Pitt of the Middle Ages? Pantheon, a new project developed by The MIT Media Lab, can give you a pretty good idea. Pantheon is a massive, interactive database of fame that "measures the global popularity of historical characters." Fusion spoke with Cesar Hidalgo, director of MIT's Macro Connections group, to learn more about the project, which just went live this weekend.

How did the Pantheon team measure the fame of historical figures from 6000 years ago? "We focused on the production of cultural work," Hidalgo said. "This could be anything from a film to a painting to winning a sports championship. The project is celebrating these cultural accomplishments."

Part of the appeal of the project? We all love lists. Aristotle is the number one most famous person since 4000 BC, with Jesus Christ ranking third. But Hidalgo said it's a mistake to look at the rankings without digging deeper into historical context.

"For me, the most interesting part isn't about who the most famous Canadian of all time is," he said. Hidalgo prefers to look at the way this data connects fame with the development of communication technology.

"Before 1400, the most famous people were mostly politicians and philosophers. After the printing press in 1400, there’s a whole new cultural domain: scientists, artists, composers. Then, at the beginning of the 20th c. when you get radio and film, you then see new categories of fame, like actors, singers and musicians."

What will be the next category of fame? Hidalgo thinks the answer lies in tech.

"As our species has evolved in last 6000 yrs there have been sharp changes corresponding with new technologies. This opens the question: with the web, who becomes famous? What are the new cultural domains? I think the Mark Zuckerbergs will be the cultural figures of our time."

Ljubomir, thanks for bringing this information out. I did not know such a project exists. But I could not find any data on my country of birth Ethiopia, I assume the project is yet on progress..

The vistion statement of the project says: " Pantheon is a project celebrating the cultural information that endows our species with these fantastic capacities. To celebrate our global cultural heritage we are compiling, analyzing and visualizing datasets that can help us understand the process of global cultural development". I commend the spirit of the project hoping my country of birth and others be included in the list and their cultural contributions be recognized.

Thanks Ljubomir Jacic for bringing this to our notice. It is really interesting. Their main source of information is the Wikipedia besides other specific ones. The more wiki pages you have about your region, the better will be the coverage. That way is handicapped to that extent. This is about India.

Ljubomir Jacic: When I see the Indian coverage it seems to be skewed with more Politicians and actors. The surprise to me is why Pandit Ravi Shankar is not there in the list of top 10 while Vivien Leigh is there because she was born in India but nobody in the current generation may know her. Otherwise the rest seems to be fine. I would have loved to see Dhyan Chand in sports. It is also lacking in past kings and queens. I think they should not use place of birth solely as a criterion, but probably where their active work was involved may give better representation.

It is interesting. There are a number of possibilities for this behavior. Since Pantheon utilizes wiki as the main source of information, it is possible that not many wiki pages are available for other persons. Also the language. May be we have many wiki pages in Serbian language than in English. If pantheon is not utilizing other language wikis that also may skew the results. I know for India with so many regional languages such as Hindi, Telugu, Bengali and Tamil, if they are not considered then the results are likely to be affected.
