I have read that most common humane mycoplasma species that infect cell cultures are M. fermentans and M. orale. Does anyone of you have encountered infections by M. pneumonia? If yes, what could the contamination source be (apart from humans)?
I futher wonder if the M.pneumonia is a fermating or non-fermating (arginine consuming) species?
Any help and pointers would be appreciated!

I am afraid you misunderstood my question... I was wondering on specifics around M.pneumonia and it possible infection sources. Please re-read my question above.

Mycoplasma pneumoniae is relatively fastidious even by mycoplasma standards, which would tend to minimize its ability to be a cell culture contaminant. Although this species is a common pathogen of humans, I am unaware of its being found in cell cultures unless intentionally inoculated in the laboratory. However, In principle, this species would certainly be capable of contaminating any cell culture. M. pneumoniae is fermentative and not thought to be arginine consuming. However, its genome possesses genes indicative of arginine utlilization. I would not be surprised to learn that some isolate of M. pneumoniae can catabolize arginine under some conditions.
