One of our suppliers introduced me to Cultrex® BME PathClear and Geltrex® Matrix as the alternatives to matrigel. I was wondering as if anybody has experience of using these products?
Just recently I've successfully transferred my cells (just one line) from Marigel/mTeSR to GelTrex/Essential8 conditions. I just asked for samples (free)! The morphology is great, however I will modify some of the parameters in near future and do some more tests, to verify the healthiness of my hiPSCs.
When transferring cells from feeder-conditions to feeder-independent, Matrigel seems to be a necessary intermediate step, with GelTrex many cells died...
Another alternative would be Vitronectin...
When I've finally decided what's the best for my cells, I'll let you know!
I noticed your question, however I think the title deserves a bit of a wider response. There are multiple Matrigel alternatives, not only the ones which you have listed.
There are more defined hydrogel systems which allow for a control over the hydrogel in which cells are embedded, where I would argue Cellendes (https://www.cellendes.com/) and HyStem (https://esibio.com/index.php/hystem-c-hydrogels/) are competent, well established systems. Alternatively, if you want to embed cells in a less defined, but more specific environment like one derived from specific tissues, Xylyx (https://xylyxbio.com/products/) offers a wide variety of different products to suit those needs.
I have to admit however, I am biased as our company also offers a Matrigel alternative, which is both defined and specific (https://www.denovomatrix.com/products/screenmatrix). I hope my answer helps you make the most informed decision for your cell culture!
TissueLabs™ offers MatriXpec™ 3D, which is a tissue-specific (!!!) alternative to Matrigel, particularly for 3D cell culture. Check it out at www.tissuelabs.com.
