In an attempt to determine the best growth conditions in liquid culture medium, yeasts grew significantly in YPD medium, however I cannot find scientific explanation in articles that justify better growth in this medium. Yeasts of Candida and Rhodotorula

One thing that springs to mind is the glucose is much higher in YPD (usually 1 or 2%) than RPMI (0.2%). Lots of other concentrations will be different. YPD is very rich and is a standard medium used for Candida. I would think RPMI would only be used if you're trying to understand the fungi in conditions more relevant to a mammalian host. One specific thought if you're working with Candida albicans is that RPMI tends to promote hyphal growth, which is a completely different form of growth from yeast form growth and will make measuring OD600 pretty difficult.
Ruben Miguel YPD is very rich medium as compared to RPMI and also it is undefined in terms of exact constituents (yeast extract and peptone, not known for exact composition). Secondly, since RPMI (defined media) has low glucose, you need also to check the morphology of your cells, as correctly pointed by Andrew Pountain
