I have seen that some of the published articles in LC which is having as less as 0.25 as k value.I have calculated the k value with the use of formula given in Snyder book by using column length and internal diameter and the flow rate of the mobile phase. Isn't it thaat we require a k value of minimum 0.5? Please put light on it.
I assume you are talking about Capacity factor, k' varies from 0 for an unretained component to infinity. values close to 0 indicate very little retention on the column and may be less useful for analysis that larger values. Thus you probasbly like to see values above 0.5 if you are developing a method. But there is no reason not to observe such values. Also, the k value is very dependent on an accurate measurement of the retention of an unretained peak or accurate knowledge of the column properties. This information is very difficult to obtain with high accuracy.
So we can accept a method with a capacity factor of less than 0.5?
When we talk about narrow peaks, how much narrow actually we are expecting? If at half the peak height it is showing 0.14(min), is it good enough?
Thank you Bruce. I understood your point that the width of the peak is not the relevant test. However, for my reference purpose I want to know upto what limit we can say some peak is narrow? How you decide peak is narrow or not, kindly explain.
