I am a PhD student exploring various genome sequencing approaches and NGS platforms before settling on one for my research. While searching WGS info, I found nothing helpful about the computational resources (hardware, software)required for WGS analysis so reaching out to the RG community if someone can share their experience, I'd be grateful to you. Thanks.
Resources will depend on your project: you could be set up with a desktop/laptop computer for bacterial genomes. However, you will require hundreds of GB of memory and many TB of disk space for metagenomics or eukaryotic genomes.

Depending on the size of genomes you are going to work on, and the tools, you may require specs lower than these or higher. I use this system for mostly viral, bacterial genomes, and other NGS analysis dealing with mammal genomes too. Main thing is you would need some fast processors with multi-threading capability, and high enough RAM. The disk storage is something you can decide for the minimal, as you could regularly backup the previous unwanted files/projects into external storages. And as for NGS analysis, you probably would need Linux OS for using various open-source tools that are available.

I work in bacterial genomics and currently facing problems in doing different analyses, and my genome size is around 7-8 Gb. My hardware has 8GB memory and 1TB hard drive. So, I'll suggest you equip at least 16GB of memory along with using the galaxy.org website for NGS analyses. This combination will definitely help.
