Reports on ice-ice, a viral infection? a side effect of physico-chemical parameters (can be attribute to temperature) is one and
Rabbit fishes (Siganus spp) are voracious feeders on Kapp and there are many reports available where they have nibbled shoot tips and allow stunted/ blunt/ spread growth.
Besides, depending on the culture type, if it is monoline culture, sedimentation can also play a part
There are many environmental factors. Instead of starting a list of them, I refer you to an excellent book: Seaweed Ecology and Physiology, by Hurd, Harrison, Bischof and Lobban. It covers many factors and will give you an opportunity to dig deeper on certain of them.
After looking at environmental factors, I recommend that you also look at economic and societal factors. They are also key and should not be underestimated.
Thank you for your prompt response. There are three different color pattern Green, brown and red are noticed in kappaphycus. I would like to know how these color patterns are forming ? and what it indicates?.
Several investigators stated that majorly due to chlorophyll pigments or depth factor or nutrients.
Is there any method other than chlorophyll estimation to measure pigments in Thallus .
Hi Jaikumar, Herbivory by Siganus is a serious problem in seaweed mariculture experiemnts. But can be ignored for large scale cultivation. Frequent husbandry practices can keep them away and reduce the incidence.
Well regarding your interest on dimorphic thallus of Kappaphycus, the colour pattern of fronds is mainly caused by irradiance due to depth of water column above the fronds and the water quality. You can culture the thallus bits of both the colours in separate lines in a single raft.Wish you good luck
