I believe that part of the answer to your question is in our paper that appeared in 1998 (Falcón et al., Brain Research 797: 109–117); There might be more papers on the topic that appeared since then using fish pineal glands. Not many perhaps.

Correct; But AANAT2 is a direct output of the clock as its promoter contains clock responsive elements. If you find nothing in the literature that answers your question, be the first. There is obviously a black hole here. Shed light on it!
