Most papers use Hoechst stain for live cells. But the test drug my collaborator is using emits in the blue spectrum. Is there a nuclear dye that emits red or green fluorescence in live cells?
Anthraquinones can bind DNA and there are red and orange fluorescent derivatives that can be used for nuclear staining. See the link below:

Life technologies has a number of live stains of various colors.
When performing fluorescence microscopy on cells that expressed both BFP and GFP, I used 7-AAD to stain the nuclei red and it worked great. I've heard from colleagues that propidium iodide (PI), which is also red, can be used for this as well.
