These terms are a little confusing to me. There are some articles that refer to them synonymously, but I'm not sure if that's correct. If they are different, can someone explain me what are these differences?
Should not be used synonymousely. "Overexpression" is an experimentally induced expression at higher levels than "normal", usually by transfection of the cell. "Up-regulation" refers to a gene-regulation as a response to a stimulus. I would rather say that a gene is "expressed at a higher level in treated compared to controls" instead of that it is "overexpressed in treated cells".
I think "over expression" related with increasing miRNA production due to several artificial factor of your experimental approach. On the other hand, upregulation miRNA mean you make the gene of miRNA more transcribe as a natural response of cell.
