Well, it depends on how you understand crisis. F.ex. for me, crisis is the term to hide the direct attacκ by capitalist patriarchal structures and the people taking advantage of those structures against workers, women, people of colour, people living outside Europe, etc. So, in that sense, yes, it is a good opportunity for capital-owners and powerful people to augment their power and material means. For the people suffering from the attack though, there are not many options, and none of them is seen as an opportunity. Let's say, people becoming homeless because of crisis are not the lazy ones of the story, quite the opposite.
Unless of course, by "crisis as opportunity" you mean revolt and eradication of inequalities, so then, yes, that could be an opportunity in some sense.

The summary of the Einstein citation is well-known everywhere: without risk there is no gain; the more is the risk the more may be the gain.
When there is a crisis many try to use their secret capabilities and resources.
In a crisis connections and structures may be loosened and it is easier to accomplish new opportunities and ideas.
As correctly theorized by Einstein and suggested by Antonio Miceli, the crisis - structural and / or functional - of complex systems provides a lot of control and verification of the points of crisis. Often in conditions of "normal" operation it is difficult to perceive the symptoms of latent inharmonies. The crisis then, as Einstein rightly asserts, offer significant opportunities for innovation and, if properly educated, they can offer great successes.

Crisis that creates wanton distraction, introduced by external powers or from within due to lack of cohesiveness we see in places in middle east like Syria and Iraq, where societies completely obliterated and destroyed, cities flattened to the ground and life completely ceased to exist, is not an opportunity to growth but a misfortunes of unparalleled damage. These crisis need several decades to heal and even to return and become what they were, if at all possible to be remade.
On the other hand if crisis is caused by failures of principles, then this kind of crisis is a source of opportunity not only to amend crisis but to create more potential to fix problems and have a better principle for growth and development.

I thinkthat in times of crisis, a person can more easily reach the awareness of his own mistakes and lay the foundations and lay the foundations for remedying.
This case is contemplated in two of my papers about Bak Sneppen processes where overtaking may happen only if you start from below the standard. The two papers are PARTITIONED FRAMES IN DISCRETE BAK SNEPPEN MODELS (more mathematical) and Utopias of Perfection and their Dystopias (more colloquial).
According this very popular model, overtaking is not very likely but it may happen only in this case. This theoretical example shows that unfortunately crisis is very often a damage but the variance is highly increased, soo that fortunate evolution may follow according to Einstein's hope.

In my view, a crisis may be an opportunity, but also, as noted in this thread by Dr. Ahmadi-Nedushan, a danger that may end up doing harming or destroying us .I also think a crisis in a country is something different from the crisis of an individual. Social learning is often slow . If there are deep-rooted cultural values among the causes of the crisis, it is very likely that they won't change in the short term .That's why we see many nations stumble again and again against the same stone. Personal crises seem to me more manageable. Although they usually involve other people, they do not include the complex collective processes of social crisis. The survival impulse and the resilience of the individual are powerful forces that can help overcome the crisis. In a country, however, there may be even powerful groups that benefit from the continuation or recurrence of the crisis.

It is actually in the minds of people. If we have the mindset to take crises as the opportunities for developing new ideas, strategies, researches etc. to enable us to overcome the crises, then ultimate success will be with us. It is not an easy thing to develop such an attitude.
While I tend to agree with what have been said and shared here, I would underscore that crises arise out of information deprivation and asymmetry. In my view, crises also arise of social, political, geographical, economic divides.

As Humans we learn from our mistakes, what we learn hopefully makes us better. In the same vein crisis forces challenges upon us, it is the challenge that drives us to improve. We would never know what good is if we haven't experienced bad. When things are good we should remember when things were bad so as not to repeat the decision and actions that led us in the direction of bad.
I totally agree with the idea that the crisis is a real opportunity of growth or a curse in our scientific researches because the crisis is a carrier of the theoretical defect. I will give a very typical personal example here.
The crisis caused by the defects in present classical infinite related science system disclosed by infinite related paradoxes brought me into the infinite related mathematics and philosophy, and I have spent more than 40 years working in these fields. Different working train of thought produces different achievements-----bigger defects, greater achievements.
Crisis has a very close relationship with paradoxes.
As a re--cognizing fruit to certain knowledge system, paradox in our science system is a kind of amazing treasures closely related to the philosophy of science. In a special way, it purposely discloses certain defects in some of our scientific cognitive ideas and behaviors as well as some fundamental defects in our present science system.

a serious problem is the crisis facing the greatest economic power in the world: China. In order to maintain a considerable development, the Chinese monetary authorities devalued the Yuan. This measure makes Chinese imports much cheaper because it takes less Yuan to buy the same goods as before.
On the other hand, the devaluation of the Yuan brakes Chinese imports from foreign countries.
Consequently, the price of raw materials (copper, zinc, etc.) and oil plummeted because China buys less.
If this devaluation of the Chinese currency will be able to restore the old high rates of China development, then the crisis triggered by the devaluation will be absorbed, otherwise a slow development of the Chinese economy will become a brake on the recovery of the rest of the world economic crisis.
So, can the monetary, economic and political authorities intervene against the crisis?
May these interventions overcome the crisis or deepen it instead?
This is the great dilemma.

Think whether crisis is a real opportunity or curse depends on the person who is experiencing it. If he is positive minded, s/he will turnaround the crisis as opportunity. If he is negative minded, s/he will take it as curse / danger.
Just like the example some of us might know - when a negative minded salesman went into a very remote village that the natives didn't wear shoes, he found out that there is no opportunity. But when a positive minded salesman went there, he found out that there is plenty of opportunity to convert the natives to buy / wear shoes. Hence, the meaning of crisis is in the eyes of the beholder.

Last semester many of our students didn't do so well, that is always a crisis for a K12 college. However, they just got sufficient points to enter university. A take-home lesson I learned was that biology students must be strictly assessed, because biology is the basic science for careers in medicine, pharmacy, dentistry and other critical well-paid jobs. The marking scheme was very strict, to 'identify' students who can think critically (with higher order thinking skills).
So this semester, I provided 'constructivist questions' for several topics, to build up the thinking skills. Now even on weekends, students will communicate with me about the assignments they must do. I can guide them, but I must make them do the thinking.

Here, we have many natural indicators that perform the role of litmus in distinguishing acids and alkalis. Example: alcoholic flower extracts and even mangosteen skin is a pH indicator (see the second paper).

The reference, about indicators pointing to an expected financial crisis in 6 east Asian countries, seems convincing to me. Before we get a unanimous answer about the "crisis" factor as a means for creativity, or as an end to the hope, we must remember the maximum "a cup containing half its volume in water": for some, it is almost empty, while for others, it is almost full. Who can make use of the crisis as an opportunity to grow, to have commitment and favorable minimum conditions, can overcome the crisis and move forward in its mission. On the other hand, who do not have the minimum favorable conditions for more work and dedication, however creativity that has, will achieve not always successful.
Argentina (my country)currently is partially isolated by protectionist policies in an economy which enhances its domestic market and disengaged from the ongoing global crisis. Even with the neighbors who are more dependent on the global market.
I would recommend similar policies to avoid a "unique crisis" and undock a possible common catastrophe from which no one benefits. Our country has experience in all types of "crisis"

In that sense the mathematical theories that "explain" the crisis, are always based on "subjective" parameters that are outside of science. I am not in favor of a science for large economic groups who see the "opportunity" of the market. Precisely because the "opportunity" is a window to the "visionaries" by multiply at the expense of the rest.
