I am working on generating bioactive peptides from a natural source. I have read a few articles where people chemically synthesize the peptides after they have identified it in their bioactive hydrolysate. I was wondering what is it essential to chemically sythesize the peptides? Is it just to check their activity in a purified form?

It is not "necessary," but it MAY be useful to unambiguously establish the amino acid order in the peptide chain. Understanding the exact chemical structure will further elaborate the biochemical processes it impacts, and may offer the possibility of xenobiotic intervention in the future. A first example that comes to my mind is the peptidomimetic drug bortezomib.
It is important to synthetize bioactive peptides in an aim to prove that the bioactivity is truly due to the peptide that you have identified. But be careful, the conformation of the native peptide may be different than synthetized one. Once the bioactity is confirmed, you could use the synthetized peptide to elucidate the mode of action, to determine IC50... Thus you may escaping to the laborious steps of purifications.
How you are confirming your peptide sequence - MS or Maldi?
Have you did any peptide sequencing analysis?
It is really helpful, if you chemically synthesise the peptide (or obtain from commercial source) and comparing its activity with your isolated one. But as Benoit Cudennec mentioned, there is a danger about conformation, especially, if your sequence peptide contains multiple Cys-Cys linkages.
Instead if your biopeptide is really very long and difficult to synthesis, you can pretend with batch-to-batch results (need to be similar) . Eventhen, having peptide sequencing analysis is added plus.
In addition to what Benoit and Murugesan mentioned, in terms of comparing and recapitulate the activity of your isolated peptide with a pure synthetic one, it should be noted that once peptide(s) are identified in a natural product, new questions/hypotheses may come into mind for other activities since bioactive peptides are multi-functional. In this case, it is always better to use the synthetic peptide to test other bioactivities. Moreover, using synthetic peptides help structure-function studies of peptides for a particular activity. It is also important when someone likes to study the molecular pathways regarding an observed activity.

If you got peptide naturally from bio source means need to prove its identity and confirm the desired sequence. and naturally derived peptides not easy to use it for any application purpose because derived from bio sources, so many other trace of natural complex pattern may be hidden in same sequence - not able to use it for drug development like this applications. Also next parameter is reference - without standard unable to confirm extracted or naturally occurring peptide identity.
Purification to application was ruled out in the case of naturally derived peptides.
Difficult to modify or operate for further research - if naturally extracted means.
