I read that the diatom genus Bidduphia renamed as Odontella. But still researchers are using both names. Are they different genus or synonym of each other?
Odontella is a genus belonging to the Triceratiaceae and Biddulphia is a genus belonging to the Biddulphiaceae. Triceratiaceae has ocellate elevations and Biddulphiaceae has pseudo-ocellate elevations.
The genus Biddulphia is still accepted, and it is not a synonym of Odontella. Many species of the genus Biddulphia were transferred to the genus Odontella because of the ocelli, but not all them. For example, the accepted name for Biddulphia mobiliensis is Odontella mobiliensis and for Biddulphia regia is Odontella regia, but Biddulphia biddulphiana is still accepted in the genus Biddulphia .
Recently Odontella mobiliensis, Odontella regia and Odontella sinensis were transferred to the new genus Trieres Ashworth & Theriot by Ashworth et al. (2014), see below.
ASHWORTH M.P., NAKOV T. & THERIOT E.C. 2013. Revisiting Ross & Sims (1971): toward a molecular phylogeny of the Bidulphiaceae and Eupodiscaceae (Bacillariophyceae). Journal of Phycology 49 (6): 1207-1222.
In the references of this paper you can found a lot of papers that you can consult for understand the problema.
2. Species Checked: verified by a taxonomic editorOdontella antediluviana (Ehrenberg) M. Peragallo, 1903 accepted as Checked: verified by a taxonomic editorBiddulphia antediluviana (Ehrenberg) Van Heurck, 1885.
Only one reference refer to Trieres as Eugenia mentioned according to ASHWORTH et al. 2013, "that there are monophyletic genera within both the Biddulphiaceae and Eupodiscaceae, and recommend the taxa within the Odontella mobilensis/sinensis/regia clade be transferred to a new genus: Trieres Ashworth & Theriot."
The correct name of the species mentioned by Frikrat is Odontella obtusa Kützing or considering the point of view of Hustedt Odontella aurita var. obtusa (Kützing) Hustedt. I am working with this species from Argentinian coastal waters and discussing it with Odontella aurita (Lyngbye) Agardh. This species presents ocellate elevations, not pseudocellate elevations as Biddulphia species.
The correct name of the second species that you mentioned is Amphitetras antediluviana Ehrenberg, as all can note there is a long and difficult taxonomic and nomenclatural history in the members of Triceratiaceae and Eupodiscaceae.
As you can note the genus Trieres was recently erected, thus there are no other authors that consider this group of species in the new genus. In my opinion this taxon is clearly sustaining.
Thank you for your explanation, but kindly do you read any other paper confirm the new specie (Trieres) as you know the confirmation of new species is important.
I understand your point of view, when you are determining species you can consider necessary to find more than an author for deciding if you the new genus. I am working with genus Odontella s. l. for Argentinian coastal waters and in my oppinion Trieste is a genus with a clear circunscription.
