Hi Alek -- I am not sure what you mean by "discovered", but I think Niels Bohr often pondered similar questions. Here is a quote that I have thought about often:

"It is wrong to think that the task of physics is to find out how Nature is. Physics concerns what we say about Nature."

Also, Heisenberg:

“What we observe is not nature in itself but nature exposed to our method of questioning.”

Good to hear from you. In my mind, Heisenberg was right. Thomas Nagel in his article “What is it like to be a bat?” stated, “My realism about the subjective domain in all its forms implies a belief in the existence of facts beyond the reach of human concepts”. He concludes that “one might also believe that there are facts which could not ever be represented or comprehended by human beings, even if the species lasted forever-simply because our structure does not permit us to operate with concepts of the requisite type”.

I try to tackle the problem in my latest paper in Proc. R. Soc. A. The paper is to appear in a week from now.

The subject/object concept of reality does not provide any genuine answers and leads back to Berkeley and reality is God, for me a non-answer. But good question!

Thank you Stanley. My attempt has been to search for answers on the basis of logic. Right or wrong, this is what I have done in my assay.

My main argument is that there is a reason to consider the existence of non-accessible dimensions. In other words, our perception of the reality may not be completely objective. I try to play with the concept in my research in the field of materials.

We are all embedded in a dynamic field that we call our universe. If you fill empty space with point-like objects, then a countable set of these objects cannot interact. A set of integers can form a coordinate system so that some orientation is possible in an otherwise empty space. These points will still not enable the registration of any dynamics. Adding rational numbers makes the coordinates more precise and you can approach any location arbitrary close. However, the surrounding of every coordinate point consists of empty space. Strange things happen when also all irrational coordinate points are added. The consequence is that all convergent series of coordinate points end in a coordinate point. Between the coordinate points no longer empty space exists. The result is that the filled space becomes sticky. Its dynamic behavior changes. If the coordinate system is deformed locally, then the stickiness of the medium causes a quick removal of the deformation by sending the deformation in all directions away from the original location of the deformation until the shock front that contains the resulting deformation reaches infinity. Finally, this action expands the occupied space. Stickness makes the resulting medium differentiable. This means that mathematical differential calculus can describe the behavior of the shock front.

In fact, differential calculus can describe all dynamic features of a sticky coordinate system.

Important is that in the sticky coordinate system becomes clear what observers are, what events can be observed, and what kind of information can be perceived by the observers.

It appears that point-like actuators can generate events and sets of point-like actuators can generate objects that can perceive these events.

A complicated structure that consists of a system of Hilbert spaces can act as a platform that enables the modeling of the dynamic system.

An important lesson is that gradations of fill of empty space with point-like objects exist. This ranges from a completely empty space to a sticky space. The fill might cover multiple dimensions. The paper shows that reality has a preference for a four-dimensional space in which the quaternions generate the coordinate system. Timestamps occupy one of the dimensions.
