Last year we started to use DreamTaq polymerase by Thermo Fisher in our lab. Comparing with the usual recombinant Taq polymerases by Thermo and NEB I have an impression of its poorer performance in terms of both product output and specificity. We used at least three independently bought batches with the same results.
Is it indeed so, or there are some tricks we should know when using this enzyme?
Definitely ask Thermo! Its all about a specific application for these enzymes, if you have poor data for your specific applications that's the data that matters. Naming a mutant enzyme "DreamTaq" is an unfortunate marketing ploy because the developers do not know what every researchers "dream" actually is. If it has very specific requirements to excel, the Mfg should provide these 100% IMO.
On the contrary DreamTaq worked quite well in our lab. We started using these when we started having issues with the NEB Taq. But I was told that my lab had been using the NEB Taq for more than 10 years before we started having problems. So I guess all brands are fine; probably certain batches slip through QC checks.
