I generally include Alexa 488 hydrazide intracellular dye in my patch pipette to have a look at the morphology of the cell while I'm recording from it. It's getting a bit expensive now though, does anyone use a cheap alternative that is as bright as Alexa? I find lucifer yellow is not as good, so I'm looking for something similar to Alexa, without the invitrogen price loading!

Alexa 488 has two additional SO3H groups on 5/6 CR110, do you think you can use 5/6 CR110?
Also can try Cy®2, DyLight® 488, fluorescein (FITC) , Fam, CF488.
Yes, I do mean 488, that was a typo. 5/6 CR110 looks good, but I'd like to use something that has been used before with no effects on cell physiology. Have you used any of these dyes in the pipette for whole cell electrophysiology?
