With a sum of money a scientists could buy new laboratory tools, or organize a conference in his field, or organize a research group that will work on a scientific problem in his field or related fields. Also, he could use the money to attend a conference abroad.
Some money might be for personal use while some are for the discovery of new knowledge

Which scientists, how much money, from what source? Scientists as a group will spend their salaries pretty much like anyone else with similar salaries, wisely or stupidly as the case may be. And some may get hit by a car when they bend over to pick up a dollar on the road and end up not spending it at all. Why am I answering this question? Some scientist should be paying me to answer....

A general question such as this is like giving money with no strings attached, i.e., anything follows. Science thrives on specific questions, which require specific amounts of money to solve, and even then necessity is the mother of real inventions. Poets, scientists and others, if truly creative, don’t count hours but do what they do out of love and a need to see yet further, deeper and wider. Money and love are both necessary, but love for or of money is the danger.
Scientists are human beings riddled by interests in the class struggle. Their science is not neutral but bias towards a particular group. The scientist could be assisting the dominant discourses or could be fighting alongside of the oppressed.The philosophical outlook of the scientist concerned will determine how he or she will spend that money. In the world of competing interests and needs, the scientist could use the money to advance the interests closer to the constituency that appeals to him or her.
The answer depends on the scientist in question, the amount of money, the environment the scientist finds himself or herself, the killings pressing need at the moment and other factors which are too intrinsic to be noted. For me, I will look for a need in my environment especially one that has to do with agriculture and/ or education and I'll solve it.
