in my research group we would like to evaluate how the asperities of two rough planes deform when we press them together. We would like to use Abaqus, due to its advanced contact mechanics algorithms. It is not clear to us, though, how to model rough surfaces with certain statistics in Abaqus. Anyone knows any CAD software/code that could generate these models and be easily integrated with Abaqus?

If you wish to generate a periodic structure, you can use CAD tools in ABAQUS or other CAD software like CATIA. But if you want to generate random structure you need CT data or similar in order to use an algorithm like Voronoi tessellation.

Thanks for your reply, Hamidreza. At the moment we don't have CT scans, but we could generate a cloud of x,y,z points defining each rough surface in Matlab or python, for instance. This would be a statistical sample of the roughness profile. Given these points, would it be possible to import them in Abaqus, and then generate a triangulation and a volumetric domain that we could apply the stresses ? Think of it as a big cube or slab with a rough fracture that separates this volume in two pieces.
Yes that works for your case. Just you need Hypermesh software to mesh your domain and use it as an input mode for ABAQUS.
