It has been proposed that HDV viremia increases the risk of liver cirrhosis and hepatic decompensation. Two studies on HDV antibody screening in HBsAg seropositivity patients have been published and the findings indicate that patients with serum HDV antibody positivity have a significantly higher prevalence of cirrhosis, a lower prothrombin time, a higher prevalence of HIV co-infection, and a faster progression of liver fibrosis than HDV seropositivity patients (Zhenzhen et al., 2023). This poses lots of risks to the patients and if not mitigated earlier, it could lead to much further complications and even death that is why screening is very important.
