Hi I am a student in the UK, want to do my PhD research in prison in the UK interviewing Polish people in Polish language do you have any idea how I could facilitate this? How to get access to the sample etc.
Now first thing you will want to do is get in touch with the HM Prison Service and explain the scope of your research to them. Prison services are generally closed systems and it can be hard to get them on board, but having a thesis supervisor with some authority in the penology field and having the disposition already prepared, together with the positive opinion of the ethics' commission at your institution will surely help your case.
Depends on where you are in the UK. Scotland has a seperate criminal justice system and prison service. Try an FOI to see how many prisoners are Polish and their aentence lengths. This migh help you knowing this.
You need to consider snow Ball, expert and purposive sampling techniques. Bring in also the Poland to UK Embassy so that you are not perceived as a spy, or a collaborator with the inmates.
Adopt theories that interests the prisons inmates and their cooperation if they feel that their interests will be taken care of. Such theories are critical realism, constructivism, and restorative justice oriented theories.
Seek authorization from justice system in UK, and maintain basic research ethics of vulnerable groups.
