We are working with sheep wool and its applications. For that we have to dissolve sheep wool. We have tried with NaOH but pH of the solution is above 10. We have neutralize it with mild HCl but problems come related to higher salinity and molarity of total sheep wool dissolved solution. Is there any chemicals to dissolve the sheep wool or keratin protein?
But, we want to spread this protein into soil. NaOH and Cl is not possible. If you have other idea to remove cl or naoh within this solution plz suggest
You can use KOH instead. And then slightly neutralize with say HCl.
Then there will be dissolved wool keratin (a protein) and KCl. Both can easily be sprinkled over the soil without any negative effects. In fact, KCl is used as a component of commercial fertilizers :)
