In the literature it is reported that stem cells are present in the basal layer of the epithelium, then they migrate and differentiate. But how many stem cells are there? It is the whole bottom layer of the skin/mucosa that is formed by stem cells or there are just a few interspersed in contact with the basal layer?
It is different for every epithelium. In skin, the entire basal layer is involved. In the intestinal epithelium, only the crypt cells. In the lung, it varies by specialized region. In corneal epithelium, the stem zone is the adjacent limbus.

it's different from one tissue to another, also the size of cells is different because it depends on the differentiation circumstances
What about the cervical mucosa? are the stem cells only in the transition zone? Is there a level filled with them? Tx
