Hi everybody!! I synthesize the polydopamine from the dopamine in basic condition (Tris buffer 10mM pH 8,5) and I can see the change of the color from brown to dark; I try with the UV spectroscopy to follow the reaction during the time (24h) but the polydopamine is insoluble in water and organic solvents. I want to know if it is possible to characterize the polydopamine and distinguish the polydopamine from the dopamine? and if it is possible which technique?
Hi everybody!! I'm sorry because maybe i don't explain better my problem. I know from the literature the potentiality of the polydopamine to cover every type of substrates and it cuold be easy its synthesis (in basic condition) but i would you like to know how i can verify that the reaction is complete and the fiinal prodoct is polydopamine? for this reason i want to find a tecnique that can distinguish the polydopamine from dopamine. since polymers have high molecular weights, solution viscosity will be much higher than their low molecular weight monomeric precursors; So, just by getting a viscosity index you can feel the difference (if any). Regards

Dopamine is a white powder and soluble in water, whereas polydopamine is a black solid and insoluble in water. So, this is a main indication!
Regarding an analytical technique, you can use FTIR, TGA, XPS, and DSC to see the differences. For more information please refer to:
