Cancer stem cells (CSCs) have been linked with cancer initiation, metastasis and resistance to conventional chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Oncolytic viruses (HSV-1, adenovirus, reovirus, vaccinia virus, and measles) have been documented to harbor excellent potential to target CSCs in cancer stem cell models and prevent tumor relapse. These viruses could be advantageously employed as adjuncts with conventional chemotherapeutic agents and in combination with other novel modalities. They may be successfully used to target entry receptors specific to CSCs. It is to be borne in mind that the rapidly growing field of CSC has only recently emerged, and much remains to be elucidated regarding functional roles of CSCs in tumor architecture.
