Dear researchers,
I would like to coat magnetic nanoparticles with TiO2 powder. I would like to make core-shell structure of them. I still confuse for the solvent being used to dissolve the TiO2 powder for that purpose. Anyone can help me for that case? If you don't mind, please your suggestion. Thank you very much for your kindness.
You don't dissolve the TiO2, but merely creating, ideally, a stable suspension (or sol) of it. Typically surfactants like PVP, CTAB, SDS are used and they can be used in aqueous solution. Pay attention to the pH as different termination surface of the TiO2 would affect the ability of the surfactants to attach themselves to the TiO2 and the magnetic particles that you are interested to coat.
Another way would be to grow the TiO2 directly on top of your magnetic particles, but it would be challenging because most TiO2 growing precursor is highly acidic (and thus might be incompatible with your particles.
I suggest you start with Titanium Tetraisopropoxide instead of TiO2 powder...or if Colloidal TiO2 is available, you can readily use it, as what was mentioned by Mr. Handoko, you cannot dissolve TiO2, you can only stabilize the particles so that agglomeration will be prevented.
TiO2 and magnetic nanoparticles are both sensitive to pH. . .What you can do is to stabilize the TiO2 with a polymer coating, that has a positive or neutral surface charge even at a relatively high pH (polypyrrole coating i guess?). . . then adjust the pH in a way that the surface charge of the magnetic nanoparticle and the polymer stabilized tio2 would form nanosphere via electrostatic attraction (eg, tio2/polymer is positive/neutral while magnetic nanoparticle is negative).
