If you are studying HER, always use a pH dependent reference scale, such as the reversible hydrogen electrode. If that scale is used, you can compare the activity at different pH at the same voltage vs RHE without having to recalculate anything. Using the RHE scale is common practice when studying fuel cell related reactions like HER/HOR.

Thank you both I realize that the main effect is in the standard potential for the reaction and it's not HER is a coupled reaction with a catalytic proton reduction.
