I am looking for a buffer solution to preserve the DNA in dissociated muscle cells at room temperature (because I need to transport them at room temperature). The cells do not have to be viable, I would like to keep their integrity intact though (so that the DNA stays protected in the cell), which is important for my experiment. I found DNAgard as a solution that promises to do exactly that but was wondering whether there is a cheaper alternative for this? Would storage of the cells simply in TE Buffer work? I assume putting the cells in ethanol would probably pop them?

why do you care about the cells if you only need the DNA?
The safest way to keep DNA at RT is lyphylized. So just extract and dry it and you should be fine.

for a field experiment I would like to investigate how quickly DNA degrades in a certain environment in its free state (using DNA extract) compared to when it is still enclosed in the cells. For this I would need to transport both the DNA extract and the cells at room temperature to the (quite remote) site.
Would the lyophilization work also for intact cells?
