Environmental justice scholarship engages multiple conceptual themes and angles across traditions. Schlosberg (2004) introduced the notion of recognition as part of understanding movements for environmental justice, and since then there have been discussions about self-recognition (Álvarez and Coolsaet 2020). However, the notion of self-affirmation has been introduced by Temper (2019) who states that, '...beyond recognition, what is needed is epistemic justice and self-affirmation' (pg. 104). Is there a difference between self-recognition and self-affirmation? If so, how do they differ?
