just use the proper damage algorithm and fallow the usual simulation. I can suggest you check this website, it has the most complete tutorial on damage simulation I've ever seen.

but the shape of fragment(warhead fragment or any other) has the random shape and size, and shape of this object change the failure model response.
have you any suggest about this modeling with abaqus?
what is the difference between the standard shape of bullet like as cylinder or sphere vs real fragment in failure response of metallic target?
