I am working on MFC process. I am planning to make 30% wet proof carbon cloth by using non-wet proof plain carbon cloth and PTFE (60% dispersed in water). How is the procedure?
You can brush the PTFE dispersion on both sides of the carbon cloth using a paint brush. For better uniformity, you may want to dilute the PTFE dispersion a bit more, to say 20-30% PTFE. After each round of brushing, dry it with a hot plate at about 100oC to dry out water. You can then brush additional rounds until you get 30% wet proof. Finally, anneal it at 350oC for 30 min to help PTFE spread evenly and bind strongly on the carbon cloth.
30% wet proof means that after each round of brushing and drying (at 100 degree), we have to measure the weight of carbon cloth, till the weight increase by 30% compare to intial weight, And then, finally anneal at 350 degree for 30 min?
Can also use deeping method in place of brushing method?
Yes, please measure the weight of the sample after each round until you get the desired weight increase. If you fully dry it at 100oC, the weight does not change significantly after annealing.
About the weight increase, it depends on how you define your 30% wet proof. If you meant 30% PTFE : 70% carbon cloth by weight in the final stage, then the relative increase to the initial weight is 30/70.
Probably you will not have a very good control of the PTFE loading if you use dipping method.
