I am looking at peritoneal macrophages and neutrophils in mice that have extreme peritonitis. The non-survivors have decreased phagocytosis (pHrodo e.coli) and reactive oxygen burst (DHR-123, stim with FcR or PMA) as compared to survivors.

How could I determine whether the decrease is due to immuno-suppression or due to the cells being spent from the "battle"?
